Best Toaster Ovens for Small Counters: Verified Footprints, Ranked

As an Amazon Associate, The Counter Lab earns from qualifying purchases. We don’t do hands-on testing and we don’t accept free units. Everything below is compared on manufacturer pages and official manuals we opened ourselves plus prices we read on opened retailer pages — each price stamped with the store and the date we read it, because prices move and the number at checkout is the one that counts.

A small counter doesn’t care how many functions the box lists. It cares about one rectangle: width times depth, measured from the dimensions the brand itself published. For this slice we filtered our catalog to four toaster ovens whose dimensions are verifiably published — then did the footprint math so you can rank them on the one number your counter actually feels. Along the way you’ll find two honest gaps (a depth the brand never published, a metric-only spec sheet) handled the way we always handle them: labeled, not borrowed.

The models we’re comparing

BLACK+DECKER Crisp 'N Bake air fry toaster oven (TO1787SS)
Ninja Prestige Smart XL air fryer countertop oven (DT551)
Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro (BOV900BSSUSC)

Four spec-verified picks: the Ninja Flip Toaster Oven & Air Fryer, 8-in-1 (SP151) — $149.99 at Target, read Oct 7, 2026; the BLACK+DECKER Crisp ‘N Bake Air Fry Toaster Oven (TO1787SS) — $71.99 at Target, read Oct 7, 2026; the Ninja Prestige Smart XL Air Fryer Countertop Oven (DT551) — $229.99 at SharkNinja.com, read Oct 7, 2026; and the Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro (BOV900BSSUSC) — $319.95 at Target, read Oct 7, 2026. The flip mechanism changes the ranking entirely — read on.

Reading note: every footprint figure is our own multiplication of the brand’s published width and depth — never borrowed from a review site or an Amazon spec table. “Not published” means exactly that: the number wasn’t on the manufacturer page or manual we opened, so we refuse to estimate it. The SP151’s metric dimensions are from SharkNinja’s Canadian page; the inch figures in parentheses are our conversion, noted as such.

What the footprint numbers actually tell you

Three facts worth more than any function count. First, the flip changes the game: the SP151’s ~195 sq in cooking footprint is already the second-smallest here, and it shrinks to roughly half of that when flipped up against the backsplash — nothing else in this comparison stores itself. The catch, and it’s a real one: at 18.4 in tall flipped down, it needs more headroom while cooking than anything here, and it will need full cooking clearance every single time you flip it down.

Second, cheap and narrow is not the same as cheap and small. The BLACK+DECKER publishes the narrowest width (15.5 in) and the lowest height (8.2 in) of the four at the lowest price — but without a published depth, the footprint math is incomplete. Treat the published width-and-height as an incomplete box, not a verified footprint: measure the display model in-store before ordering.

Third, the big two are closer than the prices suggest. The DT551 eats ~339 sq in and the BOV900 eats ~370 sq in — an 8% difference in counter for a $90 difference in price. The honest split between them is documentation and power: Breville publishes the complete spec box (all three dimensions plus 1,800 W) and the biggest interior claims; Ninja publishes dimensions, weight, and a 36-inch cord, but not wattage. Only one brand here publishes wattage at all — the spec sheet transparency gap is itself data.

Honest strength of the Ninja side: the only storage trick in the category (the Flip) and the most honest small-premium box (DT551, fully dimensioned). Honest strength of the BLACK+DECKER side: the lowest price and the lowest height — the one pick here you can realistically carry to a cabinet after use. Honest strength of the Breville side: the most complete published spec sheet and the biggest published cooking claims — you just pay for the extra counter it occupies.

Verdicts by case

  • Counter space must disappear between meals: the Ninja Flip (SP151) — $149.99, Target, Oct 7 2026. The only oven here that stores itself upright, roughly halving its ~195 sq in footprint. Honest trade: 18.4 in of headroom needed every time you flip it down, and wattage/temp ranges aren’t published.
  • Permanent install, narrowest gap, lowest budget: the BLACK+DECKER Crisp ‘N Bake (TO1787SS) — $71.99, Target, Oct 7 2026. 15.5 in wide, 8.2 in tall, 8.8 lb. Honest trade: depth is not published, so the footprint is an incomplete box — verify in person.
  • Big-oven cooking without the Breville box: the Ninja Prestige Smart XL (DT551) — $229.99, SharkNinja.com, Oct 7 2026. ~339 sq in, full published dimensions, Smart Cook thermometer. Honest trade: wattage not published; at 33.62 lb this one stays where you put it.
  • Maximum documented capacity, and you have the counter: the Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro (BOV900BSSUSC) — $319.95, Target, Oct 7 2026. The only 1,800 W published wattage here, the biggest published interior claims, and the most complete spec sheet. Honest trade: ~370 sq in is the largest footprint here, and it’s the priciest pick.

How we compared

All dimensions, weights, wattages, and capacity claims come from the manufacturer spec blocks we opened and read on Oct 7, 2026: sharkninja.ca for the SP151 (metric), blackanddecker.com for the TO1787SS, sharkninja.com for the DT551, breville.com for the BOV900. Footprint figures are our own multiplication of those published dimensions — never borrowed from a review site or an Amazon spec table. Prices are our own dated reads on opened retailer pages. We don’t do hands-on testing and we don’t accept free units. Amazon links appear only for models whose ASINs we confirmed against the exact model number: B01N5UPTZS (BOV900BSSUSC), B0D4R7DMYN (DT551).
